Major changes in Xfce 4.4BETA1
As you might already know, Xfce 4.4BETA1 was released today, and it contains a lot of changes, that have been worked since the last major release. I'm going to present an (incomplete!) list of the most important changes in BETA1. I will not include Thunar here, read the Thunar 0.3.0 release notes for details about Thunar.
Desktop Icons
One of the most often requested features during the Xfce 4.0/4.2 days was support for desktop icons. Xfce 4.4 finally includes support for icons on the desktop.
xfdesktop utilizes Thunar's libraries to handle application launchers and files/folders on the desktop, and it is also able to display icons for minimized windows on the desktop (a popular CDE feature), or to disable desktop icons all together.
Mousepad
Mousepad, a simple and lightweight text editor, was included as part of Xfce 4.4. Mousepad starts up very fast and provides all the basic text editing features, which makes it a perfect default editor for Xfce.
Orage
Orage, the new calendar application based on xfcalendar, provides all the features one would expect from a time management application today, while it remains lightweight and easy to use.
Panel
The Xfce Panel was completely rewritten for 4.4, and supports multiple panels and external plugins (running as separate applications and thereby improving the stability of the panel). xftaskbar4 and xfce4-iconbox were dropped from the release, as their functionality is completely provided by the new panel now.
The panel items can now be added and reordered using Drag'n'Drop, and the panel launcher properties dialog was redesigned to make it easier to create and manage launchers with attached menus (there is also support for Zero Install now).
Most of the panel plugins, available via the Xfce Goodies project, have been updated for the new panel, and the new xfce4-xfapplet-plugin allows users to add GNOME panel applets to the Xfce panel.
Preferred Applications
A new preferred applications framework was imported into Xfce, so users no longer need to edit shell profiles to specify which browser and terminal emulator should be used by Xfce applications.
Window Manager Tweaks
xfwm4, the Xfce window manager, saw a lot of improvements. One of the most interesting user-visible changes is the inclusion of a window manager tweaks dialog, which allows users to tweak several advanced options of the window manager.
There is also support to tweak the builtin composition manager in the window manager settings if xfwm4 was built with support for the Xcomposite extension.
This is just a very brief list of changes. A more complete review of Xfce 4.4BETA1 should be available during the next weeks.

I'm used to having mouseover effects with my windowmanager (like it works in KDE andn GNOME). It also helps windowmanager usability when you instantly see when the cursor is above the correct button and don't press a wrong button so easily. I wonder if there is any way (or plans?) to make that work in XFWM4 too?

I'm currently using Gnome, but this new features look great, so i'll give xfce another try ;)

I don't know if I'm excited about desktop icon support or not. One of the things I always liked about XFCE was the lack of desktop icons. It kept things looking nice and clean. I'm an anti-clutter kind of person. I'm not against it though, I'll just have to give it a try. Thanks for the update!

Any plans to have some compiz-XGL stuff in the future? Xfce with composite is great, but tends to be little more resource hungry when moving windows etc.

Impresive... good work guys! I'm waiting the new xfce 4.4 to go into Debian...
I do not like desktop icons. I suppose there is a customizable key to forbid them. I'm currently use Yab from adesklets to get quick access to most used apps.
Thanks Benny!

mraf: you don't have to use them... my desktop is still icon free.

I created almost all ebuilds (no dev-tools) for xfce4-4.4.0_beta1 release... All interested go to : http://dev.gentoo.org/~moloh/ebuilds/
In archive there are also all my previous ebuilds for thunar.
This is only ~x86 release as i test it on that machine, i can change that if anyone is interested.
Shortly there would be bug on gentoo bugzilla for this package...

How about creating an Installing on Gentoo page for the project wiki, so interested Gentoo users will be able to use your ebuilds?
By
Benedikt Meurer, at 19/4/06 16:47
Jorge, in the "Desktop" settings, in the "Behavior" page, select "File/Launcher icons".
By
Benedikt Meurer, at 19/4/06 16:49
Thank you Benedikt, the reason why i asked that question was the option "File/Launcher icons" werent in the menu. I recompiled xfdesktop and this option appear :-). The desktop icons loooks pretty nice. But i have another question for you hehe. Why thunar misses the icons i select in user inteface options. The only icons thunar respects are folders, textfiles, unknown files. All others (.mp3, .mpg, etc.) just appear like unknown icons.

Jorge Emmanuel Herrera Cabrera, at 19/4/06 19:56
Please use the xfce or thunar-dev mailinglist for these kinds of questions.

Benedikt Meurer, at 19/4/06 19:59
Installation? emerge xfce... thats it, like in previous version.
Soon there would be an official ebuilds in tree, but i will create wiki page there today...

Ok, i created a very simple howto for both thunar and xfce on wiki. This comment above is mine too...
By
moloh, at 19/4/06 22:45
Yep, thanks, I already added it to the documentation overview. ;-)
By
Benedikt Meurer, at 19/4/06 22:47
Icons in the desktop were implemented in the normal way? I mean, just putting a window on the background?
By

I'm waiting for Mandriva rpm packages (it's more simple than compile all). I want to install 4.4 beta 1 in the next days.
¡Thanks for all!

There are official ebuilds in Portage.
I left my ebuilds in place, and changed wiki instructions to install xfce or thunar. Gentoo users can now choose which ebuilds they want to use :-).

The *only* thing that I miss in the EXCELLENT new XFCE release is the ability to easily browse samba shares as it was possible previously via xffm (using xfsamba).
Great job, Benny!!!

Thank goodness you can get rid of the taskbar and get cde style pining back...I absolutely hate the taskbar.

Hi: I have installed Xubuntu 6.06 Beta. I have seen multiple panels on a desktop and I think it's a very good idea.
Thunar is very good: before thunar, i didn't run xffm because isn't simple and convenient. I have ran xfe (a file browser whit the fox libraries) with XFCE, but Thunar is a revolution for me. Thanks!

Hi Benedikt,
I love thunar and the new xfce with desktop icon support. I am using xubuntu. But there is one thing, I dont like about it, that is the white background behind the icon text on the desktop. This ruins the visual pleasure of the desktop. I already searched the net for info how to take them out but found nothing. Do you have any tricks that explain how to make them disappear?
Thanks a lot.

Well, that's Brians decision for xfdesktop; people already tried to convince him to make that configurable, but it looks like it will stay this way.

Hey, great stuff. I used the binary installer to get it running on Ubuntu Breezy (the debian packages cause a little angst for Ubuntu post installation) and I very happy so far. I have been using 4.2 as supplied with Ubuntu.
I would like however to mention that it would indeed be wonderful if the white backround to the icon text (Desktop icons)could be made transparent.
Thanks for all the great work!
Cheers

Yes, please give us an option to remove the white background of the desktop icons' text...that would really help make the desktop beautiful for us few who are fixated on this.

Hello, I rellay like XFCE4.4 Beta1,
it's really amazing.
BTW,I would like to know will Thunar support thumbnail for video files in the future?
By
Anonymous, at 11/5/06 07:18
It does already when compiled with support for GNOME thumbnailers (requires gconf) and totem-video-thumbnailer is installed.

I'm another one who doesn't like the white background that is present on all desktop icons, the whole idea of using icons is that the icon represents the object, you don't actually need ANY text, if you don't know that the small image of a house represents your "home" folder, you shouldn't be using a computer ... please at least remove that horrible white background, or better still have an option to remove it AND the text altogether!

riki_tiki_sativa, at 16/7/06 01:23
It seems to provide desktop icons OR desktop minimized application but NOT both. Check out the setup window for the Desktop.
