Autostart Editor

Since we're now using desktop files instead of arbitrary scripts or symlinks, it is pretty easy to make the list of autostarted applications editable through a simple user interface. And so here's xfce4-autostart-editor:

xfce4-autostart-editor is now part of xfce4-session (trunk, rev 16232). I'm looking for an icon - or atleast an idea about how such an icon could look like - for this tool (unfortunately Francois is away).

  • Is there any reasonable way, from a UI point of view, to merge this with the UI for deleting apps from the managed session, disabling the panel, and the like?

  • Maybe something like this:

    Xfce Desktop
    [ ] Panel (xfce4-panel)
    [x] Desktop manager (xfdesktop)
    [x] Window manager (xfwm4)

    Managed applications
    [x] Terminal
    [x] ...

    Unmanaged applications
    [x] firefox
    [x] thunderbird
    [x] ...

  • Yep, thats the idea, once xfce4-session supports D-BUS (maybe Xfce 4.4, but most probably 4.6).

  • Big problem I found with this applet is that once an item has been created, there is no way (that I can find) in which you can tell what it actually does, or debug it if it doesn't work as expected.

  • Also no GUI way to edit/modify an entry. Must remove then create again?
